Hastings is synonymous with 1066 when William the Conqueror and his Norman army defeated King Harold at Battle. William built an Abbey in the picturesque town of Battle to celebrate his conquest and left a legacy of Norman Churches and Castles throughout the South East. Of particular note are the beautiful moated castles at Herstmonceaux and Bodiam. Other attractions in the area are the gorgeous gardens at Great Dixter and the intriguing follies built by Mad Jack Fuller at Brightling. Rye and Burwash are just two of the many enchanting towns and villages to explore in this part of Sussex that is so rich in history and natural charm.
