The threat of invasion has left its mark on every mile of the Kent coast. The Roman fort at Reculver was built to repel Saxon raids, while Upnor Castle on the Medway estuary was built by Elizabeth 1st to protect the Naval Dockyard at Chatham. The Dockyard is now a fascinating museum of maritime history. The Victorians popularised sea-bathing and developed resorts such as Herne Bay and Margate. The artist, Turner, praised the skies over Margate as “the loveliest in all Europe” and a Contemporary Art Gallery is named in his honour. Oysters are celebrated and enjoyed at the delectable town of Whitstable which also has a thriving artistic community.
