The coast of East and West Sussex presents a string of seaside resorts within a diverse landscape of dramatic cliffs, rocky shores and sandy coves. At the Eastern end, the beach at Camber is characterised by miles of dunes perfect for kite flying. On the Western boundary, the harbour at Chichester provides safe havens for sailing. In between are many contrasting highlights including the nature reserve at Rye Harbour, the vibrant city of Brighton and the breathtaking Seven Sisters cliff formation at Beachy Head. The ancient Cinque Port of Hastings recalls a history of fishing, smuggling and shipwrecks while the Roman ruins and Norman Church at Pevensey are reminders of the coast’s constant vulnerability to invasion. Each of the Victorian seafront towns has its own particular charm, some enhanced by more recent additions. The modernist De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill hosts musical and artistic events while the tennis club at Eastbourne is the venue for international tennis tournaments.
