Once on the coast, pretty mediaeval Rye now looks out over the River Rother as it winds its way to the sea at Rye harbour. Quaint cobbled streets are lined with antique shops, potteries and ancient inns, once the haunt of smugglers. Along the coast to the traditional English seaside resort of Hastings where ancient castle ruins high on cliffs overlook the streets of the quaint old town. Good safe sandy beaches at Camber sands, and shingle at Winchelsea, Pett Level and Hastings.
