About Rural Sussex

The ancient Kingdom of Sussex has been divided into separate Counties of East and West Sussex since the 12th Century. The two counties cover a wide expanse of the south coast sharing borders with Kent to the east and Hampshire to the West. The wealth of Sussex was based on fishing, iron production and wool, Sussex sheep being highly regarded and still a familiar sight in the rolling landscape. The South Downs have been designated as a National Park and sprawl from the dramatic chalk cliffs at Beachy Head through to Hampshire. Perfect English villages and historic towns nestle in the Downs including the East Sussex County town of Lewes and Arundel and Petworth in West Sussex. The most significant event in the history of Sussex was The Norman Invasion in 1066 which heralded the building of some of the county’s finest Churches, Abbeys and fortified houses.
